Phosphorous Acid is colorless crystal. Soluble in water and alcohol. It is the raw material for the manufacture of phosphite, and is also the raw material for the manufacture of plastic stabilizers (such as lead disalt phosphite) and organophosphorus pesticides. Used as a stabilizer of polycarbonate. Also used as an antioxidant for nylon 1010.

Phosphorous acid (or phosphonic acid (singular)) is the compound described by the formula H3PO3. This acid is diprotic (readily ionizes two protons), not triprotic as might be suggested by this formula. Phosphorous acid is an intermediate in the preparation of other phosphorus compounds. Organic derivatives of phosphorous acid, compounds with the formula RPO3H2, are called phosphonic acids.

Phosphorous Acid Application


1.  Used as reducing agent, nylon whitening agent, also used as phosphite raw material, pesticide intermediate.

2.  Used for water treatment.

3.  Used for determination of mercury, gold, silver and lead, reducing agent, iodate, copper and cadmium. In industry, phosphite is the raw material for the manufacture of plastic stabilizer. Also used in synthetic fibers and phosphite manufacturing.



Phosphorous Acid Function


1. Reducing agent:

* Phosphite has strong reducing properties and can reduce silver ions to silver monomers, divalent mercury ions to monovalent mercury ions or mercury, and sulphurous acid to sulfur monomers, etc.

* Used as a reducing agent for the determination of metallic elements such as mercury, gold, silver and lead.

2. Chemical reagents and raw materials:

*It is a raw material for the manufacture of phosphites and is also used in the manufacture of plastic stabilisers (e.g. dibasic lead phosphite) and organophosphorus pesticides.

*In industry, phosphite is a raw material for the manufacture of plastic stabilisers and is also used in the manufacture of synthetic fibres and phosphites.

3. Agriculture and pesticides:

*Overseas, phosphite is officially registered for use as a fungicide as a pesticide ingredient, e.g., in Japan, Vietnam, and other countries.

*Domestically, phosphite is often added as a chemical intermediate by a few fertiliser companies to improve the bactericidal effect of fertiliser.

4. Other applications:

* Used as whitening agent for nylon, and antioxidant for nylon 1010.

*As a chemical reagent for the determination of compounds such as iodic acid, copper and cadmium.
