Povidone iodine is a porous complex formed by the combination of elemental iodine and polymer carrier. Povidone acts as carrier and solubilizer. Normal temperature is yellow brown to brown red amorphous powder. Slight odor, soluble in water or ethanol, aqueous solution is acidic, insoluble in ether. Povidone iodine solution has no shortcomings of iodine tincture, light coloring, easy elution, little mucosal irritation, no need for ethanol deiodination, no corrosion, and low toxicity.
Povidone Iodine has a variety of uses in medicine and daily life, including but not limited to:
*Skin disinfection: commonly used for skin disinfection of surgical sites, treatment of burns, treatment of trichomonas vaginitis, treatment of septic skin inflammation and fungal skin infections.
*Medical equipment disinfection: it can be used for the disinfection of metal medical equipment, eating utensils and so on.
*Other uses: It can also be used in obstetrics and gynaecology, urology extracorporeal flushing, as well as the disinfection of thermometers and glassware.
Adverse reactions to povidone iodine are relatively rare, in rare cases, there is a slight transient irritation of the local mucous membrane of the wound, which disappears after a few moments, and no special treatment is required.
